In our world of “fast fashion” and ever-growing textile waste, it’s crucial to slow down our consumption and assess our long-term relationship with our clothes. Join instructor Rachel Beaupré of Wee Things Fiber Arts and enjoy an afternoon of making old things new! In this beginner-friendly workshop, we will explore the centuries-old Japanese sewing technique of "sashiko". Traditionally used to securely quilt small fabric patches onto thread-bare clothing, sashiko translates to “little stabs” and consists of simple running stitches in beautiful geometric patterns. With this simple foundation, it is a great process for beginner menders to master!
Bring a garment to the workshop that needs some repair (blue jeans or other garments made of woven fabrics are ideal), or work on a sample patch to take home. The workshop will cover how to cover stains, stabilize tears, transfer designs, and work with both interior and exterior patches. All participants will take home an illustrated instruction booklet, a packet of sashiko needles with threader, and sashiko cotton thread. This free program is sponsored by the Montague Public Libraries.
