Happy December, Montague!

It’s hard to believe that the year is almost over. It feels like just yesterday that the state let us know that Montague was awarded a library construction grant and yet so much has happened since then! In the last twelve months, we’ve organized a Library Building Steering Committee, hired an owner’s project management firm, and selected Schwartz/Silver Architects to design our project. Over the summer, we held several community input events and voted to build a new building rather than build an addition onto the Carnegie Library. Since then, the new building design has come to life and the Building Committee and Library Trustees have made decisions about roof gardens, basements, storage, and energy efficiency and finalized a design that we’ll submit to the state this month. I couldn’t be more excited about all the work that’s been accomplished over the last year or more grateful to the many people who contributed to it. Of course, there’s still a lot of work to be done, so stay tuned!

This month, our calendar is so packed it couldn’t fit on one page! The libraries are hosting several events to celebrate the holiday season, from card making, solstice lantern crafting, and a kids holiday event to gingerbread house building and a “Noon Year’s Eve Party.” Crafters will be pleased to learn that we’ll be starting a Knitting Night at the Carnegie Library, in addition to Knitting Club at Montague Center. Knitters can bring their own works-in-progress or can use library supplies to start a new project. Finally, staff will set up a gift wrapping station at the Carnegie Library, with all kinds of wrapping paper, ribbon, and bows. The station will debut on December 5th and be available anytime that the Carnegie is open through December 23rd.

Happy reading!

Caitlin
