Happy November, Montague!

For those who haven’t heard, I’m delighted to announce that the Montague Public Libraries will receive a special gift of $10,000 from the Carnegie Corporation to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We will receive the funds in January. Library staff and trustees will work together to determine what the funds will be used for.

Are you interested in local history? Have you visited the Carnegie Library’s Local History Room recently? This is the month to do it! Library Cataloger/Technician, Elena, has put together a scavenger hunt for adults. Use resources at the library and other local spots to answer questions about Montague history for a chance to win a prize. Those who haven’t used Local History Room resources before are welcome to attend an orientation of the space on December 1st or to simply stop by.

History lovers can engage in living history on November 18th. Join us at the Congregational Church, in Montague Center, to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Montague Center Oral History Project. The event will feature a history talk by Will Quale, snippets from the histories we’ve recorded so far, and round table oral history storytelling led by local firefighters.

This month, teens and tweens are invited to the Carnegie Library for a weekly after-school writing and drawing hangout on Fridays. This is a chill, drop-in, no-stress program for anyone who enjoys writing, drawing, or both!

The Millers Falls Library Branch will offer weekly technology help drop-in hours at 4:00PM on Tuesdays throughout the month. This month’s Millers Falls Movie Night will feature Agatha Christie’s Poirot classic, Death on the Nile.

Finally, the libraries are hosting an ongoing food and hygiene drive to support the Millers Falls Branch Food Pantry. With SNAP benefits in limbo, the libraries and our partners at the Montague Food Security and Sustainability Coalition are doing all we can to support to food needs of the Montague community. While we have already pulled together enough funding to continue our weekly Red Fire Farm produce distribution program, we can still use more help supporting the over 1,000 Montague residents who receive SNAP benefits. Donations of shelf-stable foods and hygiene items like shampoo, toilet paper, and soap can be dropped off at any library location during open hours.

Happy reading!

Caitlin
