Happy September, Montague!

As summer days give way to cooler nights and changing leaves, the libraries are abuzz with activity and momentum.

Last month, after a comprehensive overview of our site options, the Library Building Steering Committee and the Library Trustees voted unanimously to move forward with constructing a new main library at 38 Avenue A. Since then, project architects, Schwartz/Silver, have been churning out design ideas, asking good questions about sightlines and space needs, and deep diving into the particulars of local zoning. Our next Your Library, Your Voice event will be held on Thursday, 9/11, at 6:00PM at the Great Falls Discovery Center’s Great Hall and will focus on potential concepts.

All three library locations are celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month this September. Stop by one (or all!) of our three open houses to enjoy local music, learn more about library collections and resources, and enter our free raffle.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t highlight some of the excellent programs that staff are facilitating this month, including new series and services and recurring favorites. Indeed, there are so many events, it’s impossible to fit everything on two newsletter pages!

  • Angela is piloting both morning and evening sensory-friendly hours, for a less hectic library experience outside of regular hours of operation.
  • At the Millers Falls Branch Library, Jake will facilitate a new movies and pizza series, starting with a screening of Secret of Roan Inish.
  • Kate is reprising the Montague Center Branch Library’s local author series with a talk by Michael Marcotrigiano on variegated plants.
  • For those with a competitive streak, Elena is hosting a board game night, featuring Ticket To Ride at the Carnegie Library.
  • Library Trustee, Will Quale will present the history of the name “Miller Falls” at Element Brewing.
  • Finally, the annual Montague Community Fair will return with a fantastic lineup of local organizations and activities to celebrate Good Neighbor Day. Enjoy entertainment and learning opportunities for all ages from the Montague Community Marching Band, Brie's Balloons, the Great Falls Discovery Center, and the UMASS Entomology Collection, which will feature live insects and specimens.

As the American Library Association notes, library cards may be small, but they pack a mighty punch. So too do Montague library staff and I endeavor to provide the community with programs that will bring joy and enrichment, with thought-provoking and entertaining materials, and with services that ensure some of our most basic needs are met.

Happy reading!

Caitlin
